How Can You Control the Algae in Your Fish Pond

!: How Can You Control the Algae in Your Fish Pond

Ponds and algae seem to go together hand in hand. Algae is necessary for providing some of the essential bacteria yet at the same time if left unchecked can become harmful to your fish stock and also unsightly to look at.

Algae needs to be understood before you can hope to control it. The ideal environment to produce large algae growth would include plenty of sunshine, warm stagnant water, fish waste, dead leaves, dead bugs and uneaten fish food. All these elements would help create the perfect conditions for algae.

There are two types of algae;

Unicellular - This is the type of algae that turns your water into green pea soup!

This type of algae can be treated in several ways. Firstly you could try a UV filter, this is a sure fire way to kill the algae but does come at a price that may not be affordable. Other options that are less expensive include creating shade for your pond, using a dark pond liner that does not reflect the light, using water plants to filter and shade the pond, the use of barley straw and if you feel it is necessary the possible addition of chemicals purchased from your local pond store.

Multi cellular - String algae.

Once you have managed to get rid of you cellular algae you will probably have to cope with an infection of 'string algae'. This type of algae only lives in clear water, thrives in moving water and can often be found in waterfalls.

The best way to attack this type of growth is to stock the pond with some algae eating fish (goldfish are ideal). Fish food often promotes the growth of algae so it maybe a good idea to cut down on the amount you are feeding your fish. This will have two benefits the first is reducing the nitrates and the second is if the fish are slightly hungry they are more likely to eat the algae thus clearing the pond and ending the cycle of algae growth.

All ponds will encounter algae growth at some point. Understanding the algae cycle and the types of algae will help to keep infestations to a minimum. Good housekeeping i.e. keeping on top of cleaning the bottom of the pond, making sure dead leaves are not allowed to decay in the pond etc.

Build a Fish Pond

!: Build a Fish Pond

Having a fish pond in your garden creates visual appeal. People are drawn to the sound of water as it offers a feeling of serenity and beauty; the soothing sound of water in motion from your very own pond sets your garden alive. Gardens that contain water features are admired by many and your fish pond can become the focal point of your backyard. However, there are some things that you should consider before thinking about constructing your very own back garden fish pond.

Firstly you should consider the climate of the area in which you live. Fish tend to hibernate at the bottom of the pond during the winter months and they naturally stop eating when the water temperature goes below 45 degrees. It is therefore necessary that if the climate in your area is cold most of the time, i.e. you experience bad winters, then you really do need to make a deep fish pond If you live in a location where the pond may freeze over completely then you must ensure that a hole is created in the ice to keep the fish alive. Additionally, if you have aquatic plants in your pond these should be removed and placed indoors as they may die during the cold weather.

Another thing you should consider is the filtration system of your pond When water is moving, i.e. from a small waterfall or fountain, it creates a filtration all of its own due to the action of the flowing water. Your pond filtration depends on the design of your system and the climate of the area in which you live. Although you may not need a filter for your garden pond it is always wise to consult someone who is knowledgeable concerning pond filtration. Many stores that provide supplies for garden ponds stock biological and cartridge filters that you may need and will be suitable for your particular garden pond you may also discuss your requirements with the staff in store who should know and will point you in the right direction.

As with everything, when you are going to start a new project, you really do need to educate yourself and find out about the essentials and exactly what equipment you will need. This is even more true when you are building a fish pond.

You will need to establish whether your garden will be able to hold a fish pond You will need to consider whether the climate is compatible and whether you are prepared to regularly maintain the fish pond when needed. You should also take into consideration the availability of supplies such as water, filtration and electricity and decide whether you are going to build a large pond or a small one.

Deciding on the location of the pond in your garden is something that should be considered wisely. You will need to place your pond in an area where there is virtually no shade and will have the sun shining on it. Do not place your pond underneath trees as you will find that it will be horrendous to clean due to the falling leaves. Placing your pond where run-off water tends to flow will cause your pond to become murky and dirty so this is something else that you should consider.

The average depth of a garden fish pond is usually between 18" to 24" and you should determine the depth of your pond based on this. Once you have made the outline of your pond you can start to dig it, making sure that you provide easy access to the pond during cleaning. Taking these steps will also be ideal for holding potted plants just above the water. Make sure also that the bottom is levelled as you dig.

You will also need to have an appropriate pond liner. To get the right size, take the width of your pond and add twice to it the depth of the pond and then another 24 inches. To measure the length is done using a similar formula. Drape the liner over the pond arrange it and place stones around the edges then you can fill it up with water. As you fill the pond fold large creases neatly and remove all wrinkles to make it less noticeable.

Once your pond is full, place in any filters, pumps and lightings and connect to the electrical supply. Add your plants and fish and you are ready to go!

Garden Pond Liners

!: Garden Pond Liners

A garden pond can be decorated with plants or fish or both. It needs to be lined with either a preformed, fixed liner or a flexible liner. Rigid or preformed liners are best suited for small ponds. Preformed liners are suitable where you do not have space to dig. Such ponds, in different shapes and sizes, are an alternative to the costly concrete pond. Using these materials, an average gardener can install a decent-sized pond in less than one day, and have it stocked with plant and fish by next morning.

But to create a pond shape of your choice you may require a flexible liner. Flexible liners come in various measures of thickness, with the thicker ones being more resistant to wear and tear. But preformed liners are suited for small ponds, while for medium and big ones, flexible rubber liners are suitable. Plastic liners may harm fish and plant life in the long run

When creating a garden pond with a flexible liner, calculate the width, length and depth of the pond and multiply the maximum depth by three. Add the figure to the length and width. This measurement will cover the entire base and sides, and even leave a portion around the sides which can be covered with rocks to secure the liner in place. On the other hand, installing a rigid or preformed liner requires creating a hole that suits the shape of the pond.

Installing Pond Liners is a delicate task, as they are in danger of rupture by sharp objects like stones or roots. It is prudent to install a pre-liner between the liner and the soil, made of materials like Styrofoam, sand and crumpled newspapers. While you start the installation, lay the liner around the hole with an overlap all around and smooth any wrinkles. Lay some stones over the overlap, and secure the liner around the pond.

Synthetic liners are okay for small ponds, as their health is not being challenged by micronutrient feeding problems. Soil additives such as sodium bentonite clays are much cheaper than synthetic liners. The only drawback is that they require professional help for maintenance.

Flexible liners are mush better than concrete or fiberglass. Concrete ponds are expensive, requiring footings, reinforcements and several layers of concrete. Construction of such ponds requires professional help and over the long term, they begin to crack. With the advent of new rubber and synthetic Pond Liners, the drudgery associated with concrete shaping and mixing is a thing of the past.

Geomembrane - 7 Reasons Why I Do not use

!: Geomembrane - 7 Reasons Why I Do not use

1. Liners will eventually leak. Manufacturers have different warranties, ranging from 15 to 30 years with a life expectancy of 75 years. In reality, it will certainly last as long as the credit guarantee, provided you leave it in the box, and store it in your garage.

Once you put on the ground, the forces of nature starts a contest to see who will break the integrity of the first waterproof. Vying for the title of guilt are squirrels, chipmunks, squirrels, rats, moles, rootstrees, plants and weeds, sharp stones, large stones, sharp objects, and moose (if you live in Alaska).

If a leak occurs, it is almost impossible to locate without removing all the stones that cover the lining, pond drainage, diffusion of the lining on the floor and inspect every square inch. A tiny pin hole can lose five liters every 24 hours.

2. Bottom drains can not be used with coatings. discount Liner advocates the use of bottom drains, mainly because it wouldyes no, because about half of the sources of leaks in tanks are lining the sewer fund. When the line is cut to install the drain, sealants are used in conjunction with the pressure rings to seal. Sealants to dry and warp or break collars attached, resulting in lengthy repairs, man.

3. You can not use the pumps out of the pond. As the lawyers not to use drains lining the background, they can not use bombs above ground, leaving no choice but to use sump pumps. These pumps were designed to pump water from sumps in basements and cellars. They are not designed to save energy, in fact, they are the biggest consumers of energy for horses of all bombs. The largest retail and wholesale liners, pumps and Accessories sold a sump pump that produces 4200 liters per hour at 704 watts for $ 339.00. This pump must be removed from the tank to clean debris from your home screen. It's a shock to fish and humansfilled with oil, which has the potential to flow and cover the surface of the pond.

However, a pump above ground, which offers 600 liters more per hour (4800) to less than half the cost of energy (348 watts) and costs more than $ 100 less. This pump operates 24 hours a day will save over $ 500 per year for the sump pump. In other words, energy savings should pay for the pump above ground and put an additional funding of $ 270 in your pocket the first yearalone.

If this is not a sufficient reason, a second reason to use the soil above the pump is that there is never a need to worry about it since the installation of sealing two 8 " Anti-vortex drain at the bottom. The only maintenance required is to occasionally remove the cover of the basket of leaves at the pump and empty the trash catch. As this is a high performance pump is extremely quiet, and next to it you can barely hear it works.

With ponds Onlinesump pump is located on the outer edge of the pond, not the middle like in buildings of concrete and rebar work. We have two 8 "drain anti-vortex in the middle of the pond, 24" away. As the spores of fish waste and other suspended particles and algae settle to the bottom, they are towed through drains and removed the filter. UV light is placed in series between the filter and returns a pond to kill harmful bacteria that can cause disease and make the pondgreen.

In addition to ponds that use t-shirts, all waste is deposited and accumulates at the bottom and rot, creating ammonia which is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. As a sump pump is located near the outer edge of the pond and not in the middle to bottom, the maximum effective movement can be achieved. This creates toxic cloud areas in the pond bottom. Most ponds line I saw only 24 inches deep and the movement is not an issue in these Cases. However, the koi fish are notrecommended in these types of ponds, koi experts recommend a minimum depth of 3 meters.

4. You can not use a biological filter to maintain the pressure at high pressure with an unlined pond. Using a sump pump, you should use a gravity feed bio-falls, upstream or downstream. All these are ineffective and result in high maintenance costs. They should be cleaned frequently, removing all forms of waste loaded filter. To say the least, it's a dirty job, smelly or messy as my client, norMost of my male customers wait to perform.

Aqua ultraviolet filter contains the high pressure state of the art technology that allows it to be washed again with a single turn of the handle. The discharge hose can direct waste and debris particles in the sink, or it can be used to water the garden or lawn. The high pressure filter is designed to treat five to ten times the volume of water that a unit of gravity flow or bio-falls can handle.

Besides all this, the patentedproject this filter allows maximum area on which nitrifying bacteria can live and breaking nitrites. The "liner guy" wants you to use your clutter, dirty, stinky ineffective because the filter is the filter, and it costs very little to manufacture compared to the professional sphere filter. My opinions on the filters have many years of experience, and try almost everything on the market. I am also entered in the "Wave Filter for a couple of years and used my owndesign.

Why? Due to the incredible profit margin! When I discovered the Aqua ultraviolet filter advertising in various magazines of the pond, I gave it a try. I've used for over ten years without any problems. My clients clean the filter with the return of a handle and get clean. A major advantage of this filter is that you can have twice the number of fish in your pond that use gravity filters ineffective. Incidentally, this is not a paidyour product!

5. Safety is a concern where geomembranes are used. After a hole is dug a pond liner is placed in the hole, then filled with water. The rocks are then placed around the perimeter of the pond to cover the edge of the pond liner and most stones are piled in a mound of earth covered with another coating to create a waterfall. In my 26 years of experience, I learned that many adults are like children when it comes to pools and waterfalls.

They inevitablyclimbing on rocks and the waterfall edge of the pond. Once the rocks are loose, they can move, tilt or change in the lining of the pond, causing a person falls and gets hurt, or worse, drowning. With the concrete work and construction of bars, all rocks are cemented in place, providing a solid base for walking or climbing.

6. Geomembranes Pond shape and setting limits. Why do most lakes lined circular or oval in design? For geomembranes are provided in rolls andTherefore, only available in square or rectangular. If an L-shaped pond was designed, you need a group of large quantities of pond liner to the inner corner. Not only is it expensive to lose square feet of pond liner material, which makes it difficult to stack stones stacked on top of the shirt to cover everything.

Oh yes, "Liner Guy" you think, why he did not mention a special pond liners can be done? Well, I'll talk! Custom geomembranescan be manufactured to order. And now I say that personalized cover will cost as much as building a pond with concrete and rebar work that will last a lifetime. There, I said that!

7. Last but not least, the completeness. When I read articles written by "Liner Guy" disciples, commenting on the profits from the wicked liner construction of the pond, I can not help but wonder how they sleep at night. Profit on a day's work - to dig a hole, fall into a tarp covering its surface and the perimeter of gravel, and a shaft connecting the suction pump - as I did four or five working days. One big difference: your warranty is one year, if you're lucky, but a construction of concrete and steel is for life!

I am the person that customers of the past "Liner Guy" called two or three years later, asking me to repair the leak in your stinky green tarp. A client in Poway, California paid$ 6,500 for a pond liner with a necklace of stone around the perimeter and 3 x 4 meters fiberglass chute board. I really had to suppress a chuckle when I saw this out of respect for the mourning of my client.

This lake has a drain that has been disclosed, however, the greater water loss due to tree root puncture. In addition, it is obvious that this "liner guy" disciple his client had no long-term financial well-being in mind after I found a cheap, 7 - suction power amplifier"Jacuzzi" bomb. We replaced it with a yield of 3.6 amps high pump that supplied about twice the speed.

Then he took the lining, reconfigured oval serpentine pond, and built the hull of the pond and waterfall using rebar (8 "center) and 3500 psi concrete with fiber stealth said. We installed two 8 "sewer fund, added a professional skimmer, a Venturi air valve, a waterfall of natural rock, an island of Tortuga who supported a bridge spanning 25 feet from the pond,Ultima II high-pressure, light back-washable, UV filter, lighting in the pond and waterfall. Adding a pond water leveling aquafill mail. While it took us eight days from start to finish and cost just $ 2,000 more than the customer originally paid.

In conclusion: It makes you wonder why I despise the "get rich quick" scheme of construction of the pond liner? The guy "liner" hate to hear me refer to the rebar and concrete tanks of "construction professional." They emphasize their ponds from the seais building professional. And if so, why did they sell kits for homeowners, even do-it-yourself builders of the company to hire?

I am proud to claim more than 2,000 satisfied customers in 30 years. Eighty-five percent of my clientele comes from referrals from satisfied customers. I do not have to wonder why it is so.

Is there a place for sea basins? Yes, if you are a tenant waiting to move in two or three years. Or if you build a temporary exhibition. No, I'm not totally against the pads. They are ideal for truck beds and pools cheap! In fact, I made thousands of dollars over the years of pond liners - replacing them with concrete and steel!

An ounce of prevention is worth pond [] recovery. Happy koi, peace and joy.
